Project Care: St. Clare staff undergo training

In January we contacted Charlotte Kolff, founder of the Puppet Interview Programme in Kisumu. This was followed by an extensive conversation at St Clare with trainer George, sister Lucy, social worker Celestine and Lisanne. Arrangements were made to provide a course for some of St Clare’s staff. The four training meetings took place in February and March. Celestine, Mercyline and Violet have been able to develop and improve  their communication skills with the children at St Clare and their family members. Communication that is necessary to ensure that children are transferred to family as optimally as possible.
All three ladies were very enthusiastic about the training and trainer George. The effort of everyone was top notch. One of the working methods is to talk to children through the playmobil dolls, which are certainly known in the Netherlands. Children are asked to portray the family on the basis of the various dolls. Starting with which doll are you. Then the child selects dolls that belong to the family. Who did/do you have a connection with? Which doll belongs to that? How close is that doll to you? Which doll can you ask for help with? Etc. etc. In this way, there is a lot of information about how the child experiences the various family members, where points of attention lie to ensure that a (re)placement with family runs as smoothly as possible. The dolls are an easy stepping stone for children to express themselves.
At the moment we are in discussion with St. Clare and the PIP Foundation to see if further education is desirable.

Sport

In the April newsletter we reported that we were happy to announce that the youth competition would start again. Urusi had already registered with KYFA (Kisumu Youth Football Association). Since the last newsletter, we were unfortunately informed that too few football clubs have registered, so the competition has still not started. A lot of things happen behind the scenes. For example, the football pitch where Urusi always plays has been registered as an official KYFA football pitch and Urusi has now decided to split up their team, so that they can participate in the competition with two teams. Urusi has a lot of players and that way more teams will immediately participate in the KYFA competition, so that it can hopefully start sooner. Fortunately, Urusi is not going to sit back. They play friendly matches. In May they travelled to Awasi. It’s great to see that Urusi remains active and in this way keeps the players of their club motivated and prepared for the KYFA matches.

Therapy

From Heckert & van Lierop we received various materials. In July, the first batch will go to Kisumu.  Our therapist Samoo is already excited that the back and neck braces are coming. Some of our kids but also other people who are treated by Samoo can be helped.

Care Reintegration

The second term of this school year started in May. We received a letter from several children to thank Amara Foundation, but of course all sponsors, for paying the school fees. Most children, especially those who are already attending high school, already realize that this is an opportunity that can change their lives. In addition to a good learning environment, a boarding school is an environment where bread / bath / bed is guaranteed.

Confirmation Service Parish The Good Shepherd

Saturday evening, April 15, children from group 8 from Langenboom, Mill, Saint Hubert, Malden received confirmation in the Holy Family church of Langenboom. What a wonderful service they made of it together after a beautiful trip of several months with beautiful activities in which they filled their backpack. The backpack for the children in Kisumu can also be filled further due to the nice proceeds from the collection and the efforts of the children. Thank you!

 Three-day walk Langenboom

30-31 May and 1 June, more than 100 children and adults participated in Langenboom. Via beautiful routes we walked 5 or 10 km per evening. The weather and atmosphere were great! Thank you volunteers from LaWaCo for the organization! In total more than € 1000,- was raised!

Kenya Day

The Kenya Day in Houten on June 10, 2023 was a super day, where more than 20 small-scale foundations working in Kenya came together. There was a great sense of togetherness. The day started with a workshop on fundraising, followed by rounds of discussions where we got to know each other and exchanged experiences and tips. Also the deputy head of mission, amb. Judith Sijeny, from the Kenyan embassy in the Netherlands, participated in our Kenya Day for an hour. She has listened carefully to all our questions. There will certainly be contact between all foundations and next year there will be another Kenya day.

Web shop

Our web shop continues to be supplemented with products. This time new soapstone items such as: hearts in various sizes, turtles and new bowls. Do you see something now and is it out of stock? Let us know! Then we can include it in the next order. Order via the web shop

AGENDA

Andere Mert / Rainbow festival Geldrop 24 September

Evelien will be present with a stall full of our Kenya products. The Andere Mert Rainbow festival provides a stage for everyone who is involved in a sustainable community, both near and far.

Holiday

The holiday is just around the corner. Everyone enjoy this time. We are also less easy to be reached in the coming period and go into holiday mode. The beautiful weather here seems Kenyan at the moment so it will not be because of that.

ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD : call for volunteers is answered

In April we started looking for volunteers who wanted to travel to Kisumu for our therapy project to refurbish and adapt the wheelchairs of seven children. And we found them!! Ronni and Anita are going to Kenya in November. Much has already been discussed. Later this year they will introduce themselves to you. Our board member Lisanne and her friend Nel will also be going to Kisumu this year. Ronni and Anita and Lisanne and Nel will meet in Kisumu, which is great, because then you can quickly react to questions. How wonderful that it is possible that people from Amara can go to Kisumu several times a year!

THANK YOU ALL, ASANTE SANA! HAPPY SUMMERTIME

ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD AND ALL THE PEOPLE OF KISUMU!
